Squid is probably the most known and popular open-source caching proxy server. The squid proxy server supports a lot of caching protocols (ICP, HTCP, CARP, WCCP), and allows to proxy HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, etc. traffic. Squid is easily scalable, you may use it to filter content or limit bandwidth per user or site, it supports user authentication (including Active Directory LDAP authentication).
