Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness is often called “Lara Croft’s most broken adventure,” and for a good reason. Overall, it left many players simply writing the game off. The primary objective of Reborninshadow’s TR:AoD Restoration Project is to reconstruct the game as close to its intended vision as possible.

The changes in this project are extensive.

Please make sure you read the FAQ for instructions before downloading.

  1. Install the game, preferably without any other mods. Please note that the mod is compatible with Steam/GOG/Disc or any Windows PC version of the game as long as it’s in English. Other languages are not yet supported.
  2.  Download the 1.2.0 version of the mod, copy the “bin” and “data” folders and paste them to your game installation folder.
  3. OPTIONAL: To use the recommended FMV videos, copy and paste the files included in the “FMV PACK v1.4 by ATombRaiderFan” zip file to your “data/FMV” folder.
  4. Download the 1.2.1 version and repeat the previous step.

Getting FMV’s to work correctly:

  1. Install LAV Filters or a similar video codec. https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases If the FMV’s are still not rendering correctly (only hearing sound etc.), do the following steps:
  2. Open the game Launcher.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click on the second tab from the left; it’s named after your graphics card.
  5. Look for the box labeled Options.
  6. Look for the checkbox labeled VMR9. If it’s unchecked, check it. If it’s checked, uncheck it.

Difference between “Full” and “Lite” game EXE’s:

The “FULL” version is included in the mod by default and it is the recommended version. The “LITE” version has less gameplay changes and adjustments for those who want the game to be more similar to the vanilla version of the game.

To use the Lite version instead, go to the 1.2.1 mod files, open “EXE PACK 1.2.1”, select the preferred controller type (this doesn’t matter if you aren’t using a controller), and then select between the FULL and LITE versions, then copy the exe file into your “bin” folder.

  6. Look for the checkbox labeled VMR9. If it’s unchecked, check it. If it’s checked, uncheck it.

TRAOD Restoration Project makes adjusting your graphics settings easy with the following changes:

  1. The game will use 16:9 Widescreen Aspect Ratio by default, if your monitor has another aspect ratio you will still need to adjust it via the game launcher settings menu!
  2. Using the ingame graphics menu will set everything except MultiSampling Anti Aliasing to the highest settings. To enable Anti Aliasing, please use the launcher settings menu!
  3. Using the new “HIGHEST” preset option on the launcher graphics menu will set everything except MultiSampling Anti Aliasing to the highest settings.

Switching between Tank Movement and Camera-Relative Movement:

The ingame options menu has 2 new options to switch between these movement types. Please note that for this preference to be saved after quitting the game, you will currently need to adjust it from your game launcher:

  1. Open the game Launcher.
  2.  Click Settings. You will see a new option called “Camera-Relative”, enable it if you want the game to use this movement type by default.

Controller Support

Since TRAOD is a very old game, it doesn’t have great support for controllers and especially XINPUT (Xbox 360 – Xbox One- Series S/X or other controllers with XINPUT support) controllers don’t have great support, therefore, a DINPUT (Playstation 4/5 or other controllers) controller is always recommended instead.

If you have played the game before installing the mod, please go into your controller bindings menu ingame and press “DEFAULT” to use the correct bindings. The mod has the DINPUT version by default. If you really want to use an XINPUT controller, go to the 1.2.1 mod files and unpack “EXE Pack 1.2.1”. Go to the XINPUT folder, choose between FULL and LITE versions of the mod and copy the exe file to your “bin” folder.

If you have a DINPUT controller and if the default exe is working incorrectly for you, try using the “DINPUT2” version that’s included in the EXE Pack.
FOR THOSE PLAYING ON STEAM: If your game is using the default steam controller configurations, please turn this off as this is not compatible with the mod.

General FAQ
1. How much is changed?
A lot. However, we’ve worked hard to keep it cohesive with the original game. Please see the overview above.

2. Why are there “Lite” and “Full” EXE’s?
Lite = Only essential changes
Full = More comprehensive changes
Please download “Full” if this is your first time with this mod. It was designed around the project’s goals.

3. Why are there two DINPUT and one XINPUT EXE’s?
Please note: This is irrelevant to keyboard/mouse players.
The first DINPUT is for PlayStation controllers.

The second DINPUT is for third-party DINPUT (e.g. Not XINPUT) controllers.
XINPUT is for Xbox console controllers, and anything that uses its framework. Most modern controllers snd third-party wrappers (e.g. DS4Windows, BetterDS3, Steam’s PS4/PS5/Switch controller config), use XINPUT.

4. What do I need to know going in?
We cannot stress this enoughForget everything you knew about Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. Play this as if it’s your very first playthrough. Pickups have been altered, there are new notebook entries, etc.

5. Is there any particular way this mod needs to be played?
Only to treat it like a first playthrough. Many elements including new notebook entries with more context, item pickup placements, etc. have been heavily altered to be more logical and in-line with the traditional Tomb Raider experience. If you’re used to knowing exactly what to do in TR:AoD – and as a result, quickly move from Point A to Point B – you may want to dial it back some, otherwise you won’t be taking in all that this project offers. Typically, if you think you’ve gotten stuck or can’t progress, you may simply need to look elsewhere or try something else.

6. Do I need the patcher, too? Do I need nakamichi680’s EXE Multi-patcher?
No. You can check them out if you want to customize your EXE, though. Note: Please do not disable subtitles using nakamichi680’s patcher. Subtitles are required for this project.

7. Did you flat-out fabricate any story content?
That’s subjective. To this, we ask, “Do you want a bug fixed vanilla AoD, or AoD as it could have been?” We offer the second option. We based most of the new story ideas on Murti Schofield’s development notes, which are publicly available.

8. Do you offer [insert language here?
No, only English for now. Once the project text is finalized, we encourage any potential translators to contact us. Please note that we’ve added a lot of audio and even spliced together new voice lines, so it’s unlikely that we’ll ever support non-English voices.

10. Can I use this mod in an ongoing save?
No.

9. Does the modpack include SLAYER’s Ultimate Patch and/or nakamichi680’s Levels Definitive Patch?
Yes.

10. I’ve played the first five levels now, and I still don’t have any guns.
Read below

* M-V9 – Rennes’ Pawnshop (Purchased for €1000. Magazines are €100 each.)
* Desert Ranger – Le Serpent Rouge (Found in either the garage or the stage entrance.)
* K2 Impactor – Rennes’ Pawn Shop (Inside the vault.)
* Dart SS – Rennes’ Pawn Shop (Inside the vault.)

* Viper – Von Croy’s Apartment (Dropped by the Cleaner in the abandoned apartment.)

* Scorpion X – The Monstrum Crime Scene (Bought for €800 from Luddick, if you were nice to him.)
* Mag Vega – The Strahov Fortress (Dropped by a Cabal merc in Zone 1, by the crane surveillance room.)

Level-Specific FAQ

– Parisian Ghetto
I chose Pierre’s route for breaking into Le Serpent Rouge, but I can’t interact with the stage entrance door.

The entrance has been moved to the area with the “city guide.” This is its originally intended location, and is how the interior of the level was designed around.

I chose Pierre’s route for breaking into Le Serpent Rouge, but coming down the street toward the stage entrance, I didn’t see Kurtis ride off on his motorcycle.

That scene now plays on the club’s fire escape as Lara exits, regardless of whether you choose Bernard or Pierre.

– Von Croy’s Apartment
I’ve picked up Werner’s Walking Stick and the Rigg 09, but the Cleaner hasn’t arrived.

To trigger the Cleaner, you must pick up both Werner’s Walking Stick and a new item called Fax from Carvier to Von Croy, found near Werner’s computers. Check carefully for a flashing sparkle. Remember to pick up the Rigg 09 before engaging the assassin.

– The Monstrum Crime Scene
In The Monstrum Crime Scene, I’ve made it to Vasiley’s basement, but I can’t find the fax that gives me the passcode.

You can find it by crouching down next to his fax machine, which is under his TV.

RAOD Restoration Project 1.2.1 Release
Release Notes:

– This must be installed on top of the 1.2.0 release!

– For those playing on Steam: Make sure you disable the default controller configs included in the steam release as they don’t work with this mod at all.

– Make sure you have VMR9 enabled as usual for the FMV’s to play properly, the game no longer crashes when this option is not enabled.

– If your controller binding are incorrect, press “DEFAULT” in the controller bindings menu ingame to make sure they are set properly!

– One of the included exe files is required for the intended experience, the FULL version for DualShock controllers is the one included by default, you can replace this with the other options available. If the default exe doesn’t work with your DInput controller, make sure you try the second DInput option included in the EXE pack! Make sure you check out the readme file for more information and notes. If you want to play with keyboard & mouse, the controller options do not matter.

– If the new FMV’s don’t work, try installing Lav Filters.

EXE CHANGESGeneral
– EXE has been redone from scratch, this should resolve issues where the exe would not open on some PC’sControls
– Added proper right stick input reading, therefore JoyToKey is no longer mandatory for camera movement with controllers
– Improved mouse handling, lowering the mouse sensitivity a lot is no longer needed
– Added right stick input to the look camera in camera relative mode
– Increased camera movement speed of the 360 camera compared to the PS2 version
– Fixed useless & duplicate devices showing up on the controls menu
– Lara & Kurtis should no longer slow down when running on some controllers in camera relative modeGameplay
– You can now perform stealth takedowns on moving enemies
– You can now enter Look mode during many more actions such as running, walking, hanging, shimmying and stealthing. It is still kept disabled during some actions due to bad camera behaviour
– You can now move in Look mode if using camera relative controls
– When leaving the look mode, the camera will always reset to be behind Lara
– Added unused “death” theme that is present in every level. The current music will stop playing and the death theme will play upon dying by any means (and also if you get arrested)
– Lara & Kurtis should never walk before running when not intended in either movement mode
– You can now enter Walk mode at all times
– Improved animations when a weapon is equipped during stealth (Note: Animations when hugging a wall and shooting from cover is also planned to be improved, this is being experimented with at the moment)
– Disabled holstering weapons when hugging a wall to prevent animation issues
– Lara & Kurtis will now properly target the enemy (they could still shoot at them but it wouldn’t look like they were targetting them) when using a two handed weapon in stealth, previously this only worked with dual pistols
– Fixed the game going into the Look camera instead of the Combat camera in some cases (Restoration Project bug)Quality of Life- Changed “Roll” text in the bindings menu to “Roll / Switch Targets”
– Changed “Sprint” text in the bindings menu to “Sprint / Look”
– Multithreading option is now obsolete and can’t be enabled as it did nothing impactful besides making the characters look glitchy
– Replaced multithreading button functionality in the launcher settings (now named “Cam-Relative”) with a switch for movement type, so that your preference can be saved (yet to be added for the ingame movement type switch buttons)As we all know, AOD has a very complex graphics settings menu and the ingame graphics menu is not enough to set everything to the recommended & best options. Several changes have been done to make setting the graphics settings to be the recommended and best options way easier:- VMR9, Fog and other options will now be enabled by default
– Reworked default graphics options to make them closer to the best settings
– Changed default Aspect Ratio to 16:9 and changed default gamma to 1.0 from 1.3
– Switched the default shadow rendering to Nvidia Shadows from Pixel Shader Shadows
– Removed resetting of resolution when changing the “graphics quality” ingame
– “User Clip Plane” is now disabled by default as it was causing the game to crash when taking screenshotsand some more tweaks to make things easier to understand and to use…With these changes, the ingame graphics settings can now be safely used without messing up your settings and the highest settings will set everything to near perfect settings. You can also press the “HIGHEST” button on the launcher to set your graphics settings to near perfect settings. The only options you still need the launcher for will be:- Aspect Ratio, if you are playing at anything other than 16:9
– Multisampling Anti AliasingMiscellaneous
– Added “Story so Far” option to the main menu, which will play the Myth of El Hawa short film made by Tomb of Ash and written by Murti Schofield
– Added button to access the extras menu (this was present in the PC version already but could not be accessed)
– Re-enabled third option in extras menu (which used to be a trailer for TimeSplitters 2)Changed the extras options to:
– TRAOD Definitive Edition Trailer by TRJTA
– Making of (same as PS2)
– Developer Interview Video

To invert the camera for controllers, you can apply this hex change:

Find : 00 00 00 00 0A D7 23 BD
Replace With: 00 00 00 00 0A D7 23 3D

Myth of El Hawa was made by Tomb of Ash, check it out here!

TRAOD Restoration Project 1.2.0 Release
The opening post and the full project changelog will be updated later. Make sure you report the bugs you may encounter and feel free to give me your feedback!

Release Notes:

– Previously, this mod had 2 versions called “Alternate” and “Original”. The “Original” version will no longer be updated as it’s simply way too time consuming for me to keep 2 versions updated. The old downloads will still be available for those who still want them. The only updated version will be the old “Alternate” version and now it’s the default version as it’s the way the mod is intended to be played.

– One of the included exe files is required for the intended experience, the FULL version for DualShock controllers is the one included by default, you can replace this with the other options available. Make sure you check out the readme file for more information and notes. If you want to play with keyboard & mouse, the controller options does not matter.

– Make sure you lower the mouse sensitivity ingame A LOT if you want to use the 360 camera.

– Joy2Key is still required for proper camera relative controls with 360 camera, you must make the right stick of your controller behave as the mouse.

– Make sure you have VMR9 enabled as usual for the FMV’s to play properly, the game no longer crashes when this option is not enabled.

– There is an included FMV pack made by ATombRaiderFan which I recommend using, this is kept optional due to it requiring a codec such as Lav Filters. Make sure it’s installed if you want to use this pack!

– Old saves are NOT compatible with this mod!

Some of the big gameplay changes included for those trying out the mod for the first time and some other notes to avoid potential confusion:
